Don’t Worry: God is in Control

24th April 2020

In the last few weeks, I have had several conversations on Skype and over the phone with concerned ministry leaders and fundraisers saying: ‘We might lose a lot of donors,’  ‘We might have to close our ministry after this,’ ‘We are likely to lose x% of our income.’

If you are feeling the same make time today to read and reflect on the words of Psalm 33.

But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (v11) We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you. (v20-22)

I read this Psalm several times recently and what really struck me is the realisation that we can’t lose what is not ours. That the one who is in control of our ministry in the midst of this pandemic can do a better job at fundraising than we ever could.

So, you and I just need to stop fretting and relax.

God is the one who opened doors for you to be in this role, as a fundraiser or a ministry leader. He is the one who as provided for your ministry through the generosity of your supporters. He has stirred their hearts and prompted them to respond to your appeals, emails, and presentations.

You can take certain steps and do everything you think it is possible to weather the COVID-19 storm and to raise funds for ministry but, the bottom line is: God is in control, not you or me!

The plans of the Lord stand firm forever ..his unfailing love rests upon us … even as we put our hope in you… ‘  – says the psalmist.

So, if you are clutching to your ministry’s reserves right now and not investing them in God’s work as if you were in danger of losing something to God’s work stop it.

If you are worried about your ministry’s finances and hesitant about asking donors to invest in God’s mission through your ministry change your plans.

If you think that you are losing your ministry, think again because this is God’s ministry, not yours.

You and I are stewards, not owners of God’s mission and God’s resources. He has placed us in a temporary management position over His work and, as Psalm 33 points out, we are totally in His hands and at His disposal.

All we can do is trust Him and let Him use our skills and dedication for His purposes and His glory.

A fundraiser’s prayer

Heavenly Father help me to remember in these trying times that you are God and I am not. Help me to remember that this is your ministry and mission not mine. I want to be the best steward I can be of your resources, your people, and your mission.

Give me the courage and wisdom to do your will and to inspire all our supporters to accomplish your plan for our ministry in these tough times.
